Daan Balm

/tools

The things I use. Physical, digital, and habitual.

Machines

  • MacBook Pro 13″, M1, 16 GB

    2020. Haven't broken it :D

  • Apple Magic Keyboard
  • The grey mouse every company hands out

    Logitech, probably.

  • Magic Mouse

For design work cause of the touch surface.

  • iPhone 13 Pro

Cracked back, case covers it nicely.

  • Sony WH-1000XM5
  • Wired Apple earbuds

    Cause it looks cooler.

  • A dot-grid notebook

    Any brand (the cheapest).

Editor & terminal

  • Zed

Came from VS Code and haven't needed to go back.

  • zsh + oh-my-zsh

    Mostly stock.

Agents & models

  • pi

My default when a provider allows a third-party one (anthropic doesn't).

  • Claude Code

In the terminal, and in the app.

  • Claude Opus 5, GPT-5.6, Kimi K3 Fast

Cross-reading matters more than picking a winner: what one writes, another reviews.

  • Fireworks

Kimi K3 Fast through Fireworks feels faster than everything else (haven't measured it).

  • GitHub Copilot

For when the tokens run out.

  • MacParakeet

For brain dumps. Local whisper model.

Building

  • TypeScript

    Never going back to JavaScript.

  • Next.js, React
  • Node

    Have tried Bun as well.

  • Tailwind
  • Prisma + Postgres

Postgres > All other (relational) databases

  • Python
  • Docker

On nearly everything. Mostly so starting a project is one command instead of an afternoon.

  • GitHub Actions

Deploys, PR checks, Jira and Google Chat integrations, tests.

  • Vercel, Cloudflare, Fly.io, Render, DigitalOcean
  • Supabase
  • Sentry
  • Figma

    When needed.

Thinking it through

  • Paper

    First. Unorganised.

  • Apple Notes

Same job as the paper, but on a train.

  • A whiteboard app

    Excalidraw, Confluence's, or whatever's open.

  • Obsidian

Last. Once the idea clicks it gets written down properly or it goes into a design doc.

  • FocusFlight

Locks my phone and flies a little plane across a map while it does. Beautifully made.

Working with people

  • Scrum

Used it daily for 4 years.
